Devlog #2 — Crafting Mood and Poetry
Maybe I Shouldn't Have Gone Down the Rabbit Hole After All has always spoken in its own quiet language. With the upcoming update, I’m focusing on how the world itself tells the story — through light, sound, and the smallest of details.
Every line of dialogue in the game comes directly from literature and poetry. But what fascinates me is how those words change depending on where they appear. A phrase whispered in shadow resonates differently than the same words bathed in a pale glow. In that sense, the environment itself becomes a second voice in the poem.
For this update, I reworked the lighting so that every flicker of shadow and every glimmer of brightness carries meaning. The silence of the forest, the distant echoes, the way the screen darkens or softens — all of it is part of the narrative. Instead of telling the story, the space begins to read it with you.
This is why I often describe The Rabbit Hole as “almost a walking simulator, just in 2D.” The act of moving through space — walking, pausing, listening — is as much a part of the experience as solving a platforming challenge. The rhythm of play becomes its own kind of verse.
Here’s a glimpse of how light and mood evolve as you move through the scene:
And now I’m curious: what makes you stop and feel a game? Is it a piece of music, a tiny detail in the background, a perfectly timed silence? Drop your answer — I love hearing about those little moments that stay with you long after you quit to desktop.
And stay tuned for more glimpses as the release approaches.
